The LA Times has a story on why Prop 8 passed despite polls suggesting that it would fail:

When comparing the findings from the Field Poll's final pre-election survey to the Edison Media Research exit poll of voters, the biggest differences related to the turnout and preferences of frequent churchgoers and Catholics.

This is pretty much what I've been thinking, too. And I think a new term is going to be coined (like "The Bradley Effect") to capture how one segment of a population can vote two way, simultaneously.

Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com projected that it would be close, but he also noted that ballot measures are notoriously difficult to forecast.

Related, the post-Prop 8 world is playing itself out. LA's KUTV is reporting:

Gay and lesbian spokespersons asked for help from the LDS Church in winning gay rights in Utah, but not for gay marriage, in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8 in California. "While we disagree with the Church's position on Proposition 8," said Stephanie Pappas, Chair of Equality Utah at a news conference on Monday. "We respect that their position is based on the guiding principles of their faith" . . . "We're looking for reconciliation," said Utah State Sen. Scott McCoy a gay Democrat.

In a world where religion is used as a weapon against equal rights, there might be an answer.The British Humanist Association is attempting a new bus campaign in London promoting atheism. The copy? "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." Via the Guardian:

There's no doubt that advertising can be effective, and religious advertising works particularly well on those who are vulnerable, frightening them into believing. Religious organisations' jobs are made easier because there's no publicly visible counter-view to refute their threats of eternal damnation.

The atheist bus campaign aims to change this. In addition to the slogan, the adverts will feature the URLs of secular, humanist and atheist websites, so that readers can find out more about atheism as a positive and liberating alternative to religion.

Richard Dawkins, who will match all donations raised for the campaign by The British Humanist Association up to a maximum of £5,500, says, "This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think – and thinking is anathema to religion."

With all the negativity and mudslinging (is anyone else sick of those words?) going on, and then all of the discussions of the negativity and mudslinging, there are a few important issues that have not been discussed as much as they should be. The economy, of course. But we've been hearing about the from every corner of the media for the past week. But where are the discussions about how the results of this presidential election will affect the Supreme Court?

If McCain wins, he will certainly appoint strict Constitutionalists to the Court. If that happens, women and gays and all other minorities will be in a world of trouble. In the Opinion section of the LA Times is a quick run-down of what's at stake.
